Children:

"There is no greater gift to a YOUNG child than a cardboard box, a pair of (safe) scissors, glue and tape...Perhaps these will help create the next rocket-ship to the moon...but more importantly, it assists in building confidence in the power of creativity within the child. there is a "child" within each of us. Let us not forget this. I will give each child a creative assignment to complete, once they have read (or, have been read to) the poems below. Each, to be interpreted in their own styles. ENJOY!" POETRY WITH CREATIVE ASSIGNMENTS FOR YOU!

"Hello, Children! and welcome to a page created just for you...Let it inspire you to create your own art and stories! "Abstract Art" allows us to "let things be what they are to us." It says it in a "language" all its own, yet it is powerful and speaks loudly because it lets us "be who we are" without constraints. Enough said: Now, look carefully into the small abstract painting above. Can you find "Snoopy"? What about "Peppermint Patty"? What about the "Who" from Dr. Seuss? "Who Else" can you find? Well, who ever you find...I must tell you this: They all came into this painting on their own. They just showed up! Again, that is the magic of abstract art. Don't be afraid to make your own...you never know who or what will decide to show up, such as the "Kachina-like characters" below! Use my contact page to let me know how you are doing!" Ann

Mardi Gras Mambo & Maybelline: (center, right:) The 6"x10" figures above, originally created as the fun-characters "Mardi Gras Mambo and Mardi Gras Maybelline" for Mardi Gras Season in New Orleans, LA. Each is unique, and varies due to being hand made. A. & B. are on paper re-constituted from layers of tissue wrapping paper infused with water-color, then topped with a mixture glue and varnish. C. and D. are on poster board, india ink and water-color finish them. Their rough-edges take on a whole other appearance when matted and framed, they are at their best. A featured item on page 18 in "Gallery South's gift catalog, Montgomery AL....They also grace the walls of the Archbishop Chapelle High School Library in New Orleans,LA. "Kachina-like" in appearance, these little Shamans swirl with energy. They can be ordered from our contact page, the second page on this website.)

Observations:

"One of the unique qualities about Ann's style of teaching is that she integrates literature and poetry into her art classes which adds a different dimension to the vision and expression of her students." Katherene LeBlanc, Director, Woodland School

original (68).jpg

You, too, can create your own fictional characters, with just a stroke of a sumi brush and India ink or markers! Tip: (India ink is not a good choice for children under 12. It is a permanent ink. So choose, instead, a washable ink that can be sealed with a water-based mdeium like mod-podge.)

THIS IS THE SPOT WHERE THE HISTORIANS CLAIM THE BABY JESUS WAS BORN. IT IS LOCATED IN BETHLEHEM IN ISRAEL . THIS SACRED PLACE IS NOW ENCLOSED, NOT IN A BARN OR MANGER, BUT IN THE CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY. THE 'CIRCLE' IS ALWAYS FUN TO DRAW. LET'S SEE YOU TAKE A PENCIL AND CRAYONS OR PAINTS AND MAKE A PAINTING OF YOUR OWN VERSION OF THIS SIXTEEN POINTED STAR. I KNOW THAT JESUS WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOUR PAINTING!

A SPECIAL MESSAGE TO PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS:

THE POEMS BELOW ARE LARGE. THEY HAVE MANY 'LIFE LESSONS' TO SHARE. PLEASE DO NO ALLOW THESE TO 'SLIP BY' BECAUSE OF THEIR SIZE. BE SURE TO LET YOUR CHILD INTERPRET A STANZA OR TWO IN HIS OWN CREATIVE STYLE. IN MY WORK AS THE CHILDREN'S ART TEACHER AT THE NEW ORLEANS MUSEUM OF ART AND THE PARENTING CONSULTANT AT THE SANTA FE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM, I CAN TELL YOU THAT CHILDREN LOVE TO INTERPRET THEIR VERBAL AND LISTENING SKILLS INTO THEIR VERY OWN CREATIVE PICTURE EXPRESSIONS. ENJOY THIS CREATIVE TIME WITH YOUR CHILD! BRING OUT YOUR OWN VACATION AND FUN TRIPS FOR THEM TO INTERPRET IN ART. THEN, DISCUSS THOSE MEMORIES WITH THEM. THIS IS MUCH HEALTHIER THAN TEXTING AND TWEETERING. IT ALSO BUILDS A BRIDGE OF FRIENDSHIP WITH YOUR CHILD. ANN ESSANCE.

To the Artists of Tomorrow

Ann Essance, copyright

Listen my children and you will see

How important Art is to be...

For never before in history has Art been so needed Globally

With changes so rapid, technologically

The brain cannot process, Reality

Unless there is balance, Fundamentally.

It's the right lobe that takes us back to our source

While the left lobe seeks another course

The right lobe holds the key to creativity

While the left secures rationality

So as we make Art, we balance our systems

And give a new start to biology's Wisdom

And for those who view our contagious brew

There systems automatically balance, too!

Now, let us begin in Art's Cosmic Ocean

Where fishes of color all swim in a potion

And other Art elements of line and design

Nourish our hearts and texture our minds

To uncharted depths, where fantasies shine!

The "trick" my dear children, as you will see

Is to catch these fish, Creatively!

And combine these Art creatures in a "pot au feu"

That's your brew to create...the Artist is you!

Don't be concerned when you pick up your pen

That you're not a Picasso, Monet, or Gauguin

But rather a newcomer, born on the scene

Who's willing and waiting to explore what Art means

Let your Hearts race, Let your minds soar!

Let your pens trace a new Golden Shore

Don't mind that your shore looks like no other

It's yours to create to share with each other

The wish to create a new world of Art

Lies not out in space, but deep in your Heart

As the world outside waits all things, fresh and new

It's you, my dear Children, who have eyes for this view

So give me your hands and come with me

We'll show the world how great Art can be

Through all your creations and strokes of elation

We'll greet the New Day with grand salutation

And the wonder of Art, that waits deep within your Heart

Will soar into view, because of You!

Dedicated to all children, everywhere: ages 1 to 151!

THE TALE OF THE OYSTER

                        Ann Essance, copyright

The oyster sat inside his shell

At the bottom of the lake

As time went on, he mused and thought

I know I'm no mistake!

But to sit in a shell, at the bottom of hell

Is a waste of my life's intention

It's time for me to search for a key

And find a new invention

As he sat and he spat, the hours went by

And the days, they lingered longer

To think, he thought, "My life's for naught."

And cried himself to slumber

But when he awoke, on a pearl he choked

Much to his own surprise,

Could it be that his shell

Was not really hell, but a palace in disguise?

For as he sat crying, without even trying

Came a bright new shiny world

And the wish to be free all came to be

In the glimmer of his pearl

Now he sits regal, while above him an eagle

Knows not his value or worth

For as she flies over, he lies in clover

For he has given birth

He may be an oyster who lives in a cloister

At the bottom of the lake,

But he has been chosen

To guard the pearl he makes.

What did you learn? (ages:3-11)

What did you learn from this poem?

Draw your "version" of this poem

then make a book with each one of the concepts

(ideas) in this poem...like, when he saw the eagle...

or felt depressed, or felt great in clover...

Have fun!

SNAILS

Ann Essance, copyright

Snails

Don't have tails

Don't wear tails

Don't tell tales

Snails

Crawl on the ground

Make no sound

Go forward and 'round

Snails

Can grow

Are slow

In snow

Into their shells they go

Snails

Are flat

Slippery

Fat

And that is that.

Ann Essance, copyright protected, Intuitive Concepts One...

Questions for you to Answer: (ages:3-11)

Now, draw and color your own ideas of as many snails as you have seen.

Are they dry or slimy? Why?

Are they clean or grimy? Why?

Are they gray or limey? Why?

Were they on a tree...or the back of a bee? Why?

Were they in their shells, or ringing a bell? Why?

Are snails important in the garden? Why?

Once you have drawn your snail(s), be sure to look for them in spring and summer. They usually hide in the winter. Why?

ANOTHER CHANCE
Ann Essance, copyright protected, Intuitive Concepts One...

The persimmon, the lemon, the pear and the peach

Sat in the grocer's store

Said, Prissy Persimmon to Leona Lemon

I guess we know "the score"

We were shipped from the orchard

To sit in this market to wait for the hand of fate

To hold us an squeeze us to see if we're "Pleasers"

For dinner tonight at eight

Patsy Pear eyed Georgia Peach

And the two of them stood, long

For down the aisle came the grinning smile

Of a matron so big and strong

Who viewed these plump creatures

All stacked in their bleachers

Waiting for the test

To see which ones would be selected

And have to leave the rest

They shivered and quivered and tried to turn brown

While holding their breaths and wearing a frown

To see who'd be overlooked by this presumptious cook

Who knows not the secret or fact

That Leona Lemon and Prissy Persimmon are putting on an act

And when she'll reach for Georgia Peach

A sour smell she'll render and Patsy Pear

Will do her share, by feeling not so tender

So, once again, these long lost friends

From the orchard way back yore

Are safe and sound at the corner grocer's store.

Activity: (ages: 3-11)

Draw and water-color your version of this poem. You can be as creative as you wish. For example, you can do each one of the characters on a separate sheet of paper or cardboard, and then all together on one sheet...perhaps your cover sheet.

When you go to the supermarket with mom or dad or your favorite person, see if you can identify the "creatures" in this poem. Maybe you can buy a few and make a salad of stew!

LALLA PALUZA

Ann Essance, copyright

Lalla Paluza lived in Watuza, a town of 10,000 or more

She played by the lakeshore and ran to the "little store"

The only one, Watuza was famous for.

Lalla Paluza wanted candy, called "Strawberry Sandies"

(Small 'cotton-candies') that Mr. Fitch,

The store's owner, was ready to pour.

"More, more, more" she jumped and cried

As Mr. Fitch sighed, rolling his eyes

And curling his fists, just below his wrists:

"I'm sorry Little Ms.Paluza, but my petal pink candies

Those Strawberry-Sandies," won't be ready 'til four

As he shook his shiny bald head, his face turned beet-red

"It's time for juicy pink strawberries, instead!

That luscious fruit that won't fog up your pretty little head

Or rot your teeth, if eaten, before you go to bed

If you hide pink candy, 'neath your pillow, to eat when 'light's out'

Your teeth might fall out, and if you pout,

Your belly will bloat, bigger than stout!

"All of this raving over your craving...

Stop your fiery temper tantrum, my friend!

As quick as a lick, you'll make yourself sick

And I'm not just a 'teasin'...you're already wheezing"

Lalla Paluza's tantrum had become her mantrum,

 (just not the silent type)

Only some big distraction, would over-power her reaction,

So he set out to distract her from her lack of pink confections, so fair

When out of his mouth came the right words to shift her attention there

"Did you know that you hide, deep down inside

That little heart of yours, a bright, shiny swirl

(shssh: not cotton-candy) but a glimmering, shimmering pearl?"

Then, in a moment, Lalla Paluza stopped crying

As she looked down at her chest to see

Where in the world that pink pearl could be

But when she saw nothing, she began whining again

Mr. Fitch's face and bald head, again, turned beet-red

As Lalla Paluza repeated her tantrum, instead

Then, coming into the store, from the shore on the lake,

Entered, Beuella Blake, who lived in the petal-pink house

With her family of four and "Cheezy," a tiny brown mouse

In Beuella's left hand she held two broken strands

Of what remained of her lovely pink pearls.

She tried not to drop them, in order to stop them

From falling all over the floor.

Already, some had flown onto her hat, some into her hair

But she decided to leave them, rather than retrieve them,

So for now, they remained there.

"Mr. Fitch," Beuella said: (his face, a lighter shade of red)

"Two strands of my petal-pink pearls have just broken

And won't be worth the tiniest token, if they fall into the sand

Where can I bring them, to have someone re-string them...

Mr. Fitch's face, still red, suddenly turned creamy-pale,

When he remembered the bent nail and the canister pail

"Mrs.Beuella, Lalla Paluza's mother, Estella, can!

She re-strung my wife's precious pearls, when she and my girls

Slipped on some sand walking down the stairway last May

"The pearls got caught on a nail on the banister rail

Then flew into the canister we use for our mail, just below."

Beuella listened intently, clutching her broken strands

Then, one of the pearls slipped from her hand...

Then another, hiding in her curls, fell to the floor and out the door

Lalla Paluza scrambled and found them, plus two more

Then another and another, fell from her hat.

Next, a first from her purse...and to make matters worse,

Another, then another, and another...

By the time all thirty-six were found and counted

Lalla Paluza was proud and astounded.

All she had done was to look for just one...

The one hiding, deep inside the Heart of her chest.

Now she had not only that big Invisible One,

Now, she had all of the rest.

But now, should she keep them? Or should she return them?

What do you think she should do? It's all up to you...

(But here is a tiny hint: the "right thing" is meant.)

So, without any doing, Mr. Fitch's answer 'walked in'

On the feet of Beuella Blake, and that needed distraction

Was the positive attraction, he had been hoping for.

When, Lalla Paluza's attention shifted from ranting and raving

To helping, silencing the yelping coming from out of her mouth,

Inside of her head, it entered her innocent Heart, instead.

Lalla Paluza returned all of the pearls, she did not take

She chose the right thing, which gave Beuella renewed zing

And to her mother, Estella, a needed job, this would bring.

Then the old brass clock by the door, chimed"quarter to four"

About time to make pink cotton candy

Fifteen minutes later, those same chimes rang, once again

"Time to spin that pink cotton syrup, again!"

So from beginning to end they watched Mr. Fitch spin

His famous recipe for warm cotton candy into Strawberry Sandies

Lalla Paluza's reward came not just from pink cotton candy

But stressful Life Lessons, that were not easy, but hard...

Yet, a real blessing in disguise for her Life's big "play-yard"

And in the end, Mrs.Blake's children, along with Cheezy,

Became her new best friends, and as for Mr. Fitch, her wise old friend

Who was not just Watuza's famous small Storekeeper,

But Lalla Paluza's Great "Life" Teacher

As well as, Great Confectioner, Extraordinaire!

Now Lalla Paluza has a story she is proud to tell

Plus a very interesting story, as well. You go girl!

Dedicated to JoAnn..."You go girl!"

What do you think Lalla Paluza did with the pearls?

What would you choose to do? Why?

How do you feel when you lose something you love?

How do you feel when someone finds it and gives it back to you?

What can you do when you are feeling "blue" because what you

lost did not come back to you? Blog your answer to me...

Important Lesson: (ages:3-11)

What is the "moral of this story..." (a "moral" is a lesson)

Now, in the last two lines of the poem, what would your answer be?

(Because she helped Mrs. Blake find them, does she have the right to keep them? ) Explain your answers, then write your own moral...Such as, " When we help others, we get back more than we give...What else can you think of?

(These can also be called con-se-quen-ces. Learn that word and its

meaning. It is one of the most im-por-tant words in growing into

a wise person.)

Newspaper Interview: (written after teaching the Children's Art Program at the New Orleans Museum of Art and exhibiting a one-woman show at Southdown Museum in Houma, La.)

"Art education provides cultural enrichment, integration of whole brain functioning, creative problem solving, and ultimately, our survival as a human race on this planet. It is common knowledge that the "at-risk" population is increasing, that psycho-social illnesses are on the rise nationwide, affecting children at increasingly earlier stages of development. We desperately need to help our children "connect" to themselves. The window of Art can provide this connection through individual expression and experience." (from an interview by Kelly Lusco, Houma Daily Courier)

A last word on this page, for the "Wonder Child" within each of us..."Abstract Art" is never an excuse for Art. It is one of the highest forms of creative intelligence...in its original inception, It bypasses the brain and connects with the soul in order to create from the unified point of "knowing".that works through the hands of the artist. It is formed from formlessness, rawness and it "speaks" all languages. Overworking an abstract art piece can bring it down, fast. I have brought down many pieces by not "trusting" the process. When I get too involved or feel too responsible for what is flowing through me, I become confused and weary. Has that ever happened to you? May we trust in the power of the process as it works through us...Intuition is a higher form of intelligence than the bantering of the "monkey mind." it is in "allowing" creative intelligence to flow through us that ART has its freedom to work as it should. ...It is fine and necessary to put on the 'finishing touches', of course...like hemming a garment or garnishing a sumptuous plate of food...allow it and trust it Above all, let us trust ourselves.

"Oh, one more thing: "Children of all ages," Let us always remember that we hold great power in our ability to create. This is the most powerful gift in all the universe(s). Let us be vigilant to create a World, via our worlds, that uplifts and supports Life. The Master, Jesus, along with His many, many friends, (i.e. Buddha, Mohammad, Zarathustra, Mary Magdalene, Mother Theresa, Mother Mary, etc) have all attempted to get that message across to us." We must get it NOW. " "Don't know what to do, how to be, where to go...Ask them and you will receive...Jesus."

"IT'S TIME TO CELEBRATE LIFE...

LET'S GATHER UP THE "WONDER CHILD" IN EACH OF US...PLANT SOME GOD-SEEDS UPON THE EARTH AND HAVE FUN DOING SO, KNOWING OUR RIGHTFUL POSITIONS AS CHILDREN OF THE ONE..."GOD THE GOOD." NO MATTER WHO WE ARE...WE ARE ALL IN THIS GARDEN, TOGETHER. LET'S LEARN TO ALLOW ALL GOD SEEDS TO FLOURISH AND GROW. LET'S "WEED" OUT THE SEEDS OF HATE, VIOLENCE, JEALOUSLY, LUST AND GREED. THERE IS AN ABUNDANCE TO GO AROUND...IT IS A MATTER OF DISTRIBUTION... IT'S A MATTER OF RESPECT. iT IS ALSO A MATTER OF SHARING AND CARING FOR EACH OTHER AND OUR HOME...THE EARTH. PLANT AS MANY GOD SEEDS AS YOU CAN, TODAY, AND CELEBRATE THE GIFT OF LIFE...YOUR LIFE!"
